This Federal cartridge box plate is of the regulation 1839 pattern and was reportedly recovered from a “swampy area in rear of Spangler’s Spring” by local collector Ken Brame.

Constructed in the die-struck and rolled brass method, the brass accoutrement’s face shows a clear “US” with a dark patina overall. There is some edge chips and the iron wire set in the back has rusted through. Lead filled back retains 95% of lead. No maker’s mark. The two wire loops have rusted away.

Condition corroborates the story of being recovered in a wet area. There are two labels on the back. The oldest is masking tape with Ken’s identification of “Spangler’s Spring 1983” with the newer label added by the man who purchased the item from Ken in April 1984.

A good Gettysburg relic with nice patina.  [jet] [ph:L]
