Visits to Gettysburg began as early as the days directly following the battle and became increasingly popular in the proceeding years, as did the collection of souvenirs from the battlefield. This is an example of one of those early souvenirs; a cane made from wood from Devil’s Den. The cane measures 39 ½” long and handle that measures 4 ¾” long. Wood grain fibers are distinct in most cases open with both straight and irregular grains. There small knubs throughout the length of the cane. The cane has a type of glossy finish giving the final overall effect a dark shiny brown. An external ferrule is absent, but there is a layer of wood, hand cut an ½” to a ¼” all the way around the bottom that is meant to serve the same purpose. “DEVIL’S DEN” is hand carved on the underside of the cane, 7” from the base of the handle. On the topside of the cane “GETTYSBURG” is hand carved 5 ½” from the handle base. [MK] [ph:L]
