This 20th century tilt-top table was made by a man who was born in Gettysburg, Mr. Charles Henry Comfort. He spent his life as a woodworker whose specialty was gorgeous inlays and very detailed handiwork. Here is a great example of that.
When the table top is flipped upward for decorative storage, it measures approximately 40 ½ inches from top to floor. It is expertly constructed and is in solid condition; table top tilts and locks as it should and the base is stable as well. The only issue to note with this piece is that the finer pieces of the inlay are beginning to crack and are somewhat brittle. There is one piece, although still present, which has broken off in the design work and should be repaired to prevent further loss. The trim pieces on the left-hand side of the table have expanded somewhat and are beginning to separate from the table itself. A previous owner attempted to tack down the veneer with small finishing nails. While the table top is functional, there is a slight bend to the piece when it lays flat.
This piece was made for Edna Pfeffer Stansbury, a lifelong Gettysburg resident. It was presented to her on Thanksgiving Day in 1915 when she was not yet 30 years old. A small note on the presentation is tacked on the bottom of the stand. It reads: Built By / CHARLES COMFORT / In his 78th Year, and Presented to / Edna Stansbury / Thanksgiving Day, 1915. Mrs. Stansbury is buried at Evergreen Cemetery here in Gettysburg. [cla] [ph:L]

This is a very nice CDV photograph of Charles E. Crow in Confederate uniform. It appears to be a second-generation image; photo of an existing photo. Regardless, the picture is clear with good contrast. Crow wears a Confederate 2nd lieutenant's,… (1138-988). Learn More »
