This is a commemorative piece for the dedication of the Pennsylvania Monument that took place in Gettysburg on September 27, 1910.  An array of souvenirs could be purchased to remember the momentous event, the one depicted here is a set of bone china cups and saucers with a decal painted pattern.  There are no markings on the items to distinguish a manufacturer.  Typically, early 20th century bone china pieces were simply marked ‘bone china’, however, it was also not uncommon for these items to be unmarked as well.

Bone china is identified by its translucent nature, creamy white appearance, and is lighter than the average porcelain but considered ‘sturdier.’ The items here have these qualities in addition to gold gilt trim and sprig molding, also common elements in late 19th/early 20th century bone china.  This period in ceramic history also saw a shift from popular transferware patterns of the 19th century to an easier and convenient decal print in the early 20th century.  The Pennsylvania Monument on the tea cups is most likely a decal which was then painted.

The tea cups measure 3 5/16” round and 2 ½” tall and the saucers are 6” round.  There are minor color splotches on the saucers from age.  The gold gilt is strong on most of the items, but some has rubbed off, or is faint, from usage and age.  The bottom of the tea cup(s) is footed with a scalloped edge.   [mk] [ph:L]
