This is a “dug” button from Gettysburg. This style is often called a “ball button” for obvious reasons. These are often seen on cadet, militia, and zouave uniforms. They can be found in many sizes, this one is 15mm. Brown tone overall with a strong shank. No backmark.
Recovered at the of the Union 2nd Corps Field Hospital by Dean Thomas.
The 2nd Corps set up their hospital on the Jacob Schwartz Farm around Rock Creek. This was the third and final location of that Corps’ field hospital. Initially moved due to Confederate artillery over-shots during Pickett’s Charge, and then from flooding along Rock Creek. The Schwartz farm buildings and fields eventually held over 3200 wounded Union and Confederate soldiers. [jet] [PH:L]
