Nose section of a US 3-inch Hotchkiss shell. Exterior has a light surface rust with some original finish visible in areas. The surface is mostly smooth but does show some light scattered dents around the nose.

Shell has three flame grooves and a fuse hole that still has visible threads.

Attached to the base is an old paper label with strong period ink that reads “GETTYSBURG, PA.”

This shell was part of the relic collections in G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) Post #551. This was the Peter Miller Post in York Springs, Pennsylvania. Named after Private Peter Miller of Company K, 30th PA Infantry who was killed in action at South Mountain, MD, on September 14, 1862.  [ad] [ph:L]
