Image shows Frank A. Fletcher of Company G in left profile. He wears a dark civilian suit with white shirt and dark tie. Bottom of the mount has a printed caption with his name and Company.

Image has good clarity and contrast. Mount has some minor edge wear. Paper is good with just a tiny white spot above Fletcher’s eye.

Reverse has no photographer’s mark. Period ink inscription at bottom reads “FRANK A. FLETCHER, WATERTOWN, JEFFERSON COUNTY, NY. SERGEANT, CO. G, 2ND N. H. V.” Top has a notation in red ink “PAID 1.00 CTS DEC. 5th 1890.

Frank A. Fletcher was born in Mantrel, New Hampshire in February 1838. He was living in Antrim when he enlisted as a Sergeant in Company G, 2nd New Hampshire Infantry on May 24, 1861.

During the fighting in the Peach Orchard at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863, Sergeant Fletcher was wounded to an undetermined degree. He was mustered out on June 21, 1864.

In 1874 Fletcher moved to Watertown, New York where he managed the firm of Knowlton Brothers and in 1887 he became president of the Great Bend Paper Company. He was also an active member of the Spratt Post of the GAR in Watertown and attended the 1913 reunion at Gettysburg.

Frank Fletcher died in 1924 and is buried in Brookside Cemetery, Watertown, New York.

The 2nd was a hard fought regiment seeing action at 1st Bull Run, Williamsburg, Oak Grove, Gaines’ Mill, White Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill, 2nd Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg where the 2nd bore the brunt of the assault on the Peach Orchard. After Gettysburg the 2nd garrisoned Point Lookout for a time before returning to the army to fight at Drewry’s Bluff, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. [ad][ph:L]
