This relic Civil War artifact is a Model 1860 Army Colt revolver that was recovered near Hagerstown, MD on the 1863 Confederate retreat route from the Gettysburg battlefield.
Revolver bears serial # 128844 stamped and easily visible on the triggerguard. Number indicates an early production piece from the 2nd / 3rd quarter of 1863. Heavily rusted and pockmarked overall, this battle veteran is a .44 caliber, 6-shot, cap and ball percussion sidearm which still retains one chambered load and possibly a second load ready to fire within its cylinder. In relic condition, the military Colt revolver is remarkably complete and intact with its barrel, loading lever, cylinder, hammer, buttstrap and brass triggerguard and the exposed main spring. Pistol is missing the wedge, hammer screw, most of its original wood grips and the name of the soldier who last held it. Artifact does retain a large chunk of the original wood grips behind the buttstrap.
All gunmetal is sealed with a thick rust coat. Cylinder exhibits an unfired lead round visible at the holder’s eleven o’clock position while the hammer has been manually pulled back to the full cock position. Undoubtedly, the cavalryman (?) was ready to fire a chambered round at the twelve o’clock top dead center position. What appear to be small percussion caps are visible on the eleven and twelve o’clock position nipples. This Colt M1860 Army revolver is certainly an attractive and interesting relic of the Gettysburg Campaign. Comes with a modern tag that denotes the sidearm’s story. [ra] [ph:L]
