A Gettysburg Anniversary ribbon from a great First Corps unit. This ribbon measures approximately 6.5 inches in length including the pin bar by about 2 inches wide. The ribbon is made of white silk fabric with “COMPANY / D / 142nd / REGIMENT / PA. VOLS.” Debossed in black ink. There are some spots of wear where the ink has worn off across all of the wording with some spots of wear worse than others. Below the regimental designation is a blue circle indicating 1st Corps, 3rd Division, which the 142nd served in until March of 1864. The top portion of the circle has worn off. The pin bar atop the ribbon is made of celluloid and is backed by pressed metal with a safety pin style attachment. The face of the pin bar features an eagle above billowing American flags. The top reads “50th / ANNIVERSARY / GETTYSBURG / 1863 / 1913.” The bottom trim of the ribbon is fraying. There is one minor spot where the fraying fabric has wrinkled but otherwise the fringe is in good condition.
Overall, this ribbon is in good condition for its age. The pin bar is strong and secure, and while the ribbon itself has some surface dirt and staining, it is intact with no tears (with the minor exception to the fringe on the bottom).
The reverse of the ribbon shows minor staining and discoloration throughout and has a Whitehead & Hoag Co. manufacturer’s tag firmly attached.
The 142nd PA has a long battle-worn history. They participated in some of the most harrowing battles in the Eastern theater such as Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, all the way up through the end of the war with the surrender at Appomattox.
Specifically at Gettysburg, the 142nd was most prominent on the field from the morning of July 1st engaging in the fight along Willoughby Run and then falling back to the Seminary later in the day. [cla][ph:L]
