This Federal plate is of the regulation 1839 pattern and was worn on the outer flap of the infantry cartridge box, and was recovered around Spangler’s Spring, Gettysburg.
Constructed in the die-struck and rolled brass method, the brass accoutrement’s face shows a clear “US” in the center. The edge remains in good condition with just a few small cracks. Lead filled back retains 95% of lead fill. No maker’s mark. The two iron loops have rusted away. The slight lead loss and rusted iron is to be expected in the damp environment in that area. A nice relic in excellent “dug” condition.
An old tape label is attached to the back noting location. [jet] [ph:L]
