This cartridge box plate was recovered along Taneytown Road, which served a major throughfare for soldiers during and after the battle of Gettysburg. This is the standard M1839 cartridge box plate used by Union infantry throughout the war as an ornament on the cartridge box flap, and its weight helped keep the cartridge flap secure.
This has a nice chocolate brown patina to the face, with some lighter brown surface ware, primarily along the rim and around the “U” and “S”.
On reverse, the lead solder fill is all there, showing a mix of gray and white. The two iron wire loops are present. Iron rust stains encircle the loops and some of the surrounding area.
Initially, this cartridge box plate was recovered by Ken Bream whose collection was sold at auction in October 2021. Bream was a 1970 graduate of Gettysburg High School and life-long relic hunter and collector. His parents managed the Stuckey’s Restaurant that was once located on the north-west corner of the intersection of Emmitsburg and Wheatfield Roads. In the late 1960s through the early 1970s Ken worked on the Eisenhower Farm as a groundskeeper, maintenance man, and general helper for the Eisenhower’s. For many years, he was the Gettysburg Dog Enforcement Officer. This was lot no. 110. [ph:L]
