This Schenkl is inscribed in white paint “Gettysburg Pa / 1863” and originally came from a Connecticut G.A.R. post through renowned Connecticut militaria dealer Norm Flayderman. Its ultimate source was likely Joel A. Danner, who had begun selling Gettysburg relics as early as July 1864, running a museum/shop in town and actively seeking out relics from local farmers, families and young relic hunters until his death in 1904. He is best known for his numbering system on some artifacts that made cataloging and advertising much easier, but also put together shadow boxes, etc.

The upper portion on this shows shallow pitting overall, but the inscription, though rubbed at top, is legible. The fuze is missing, but the screw threads of the hole are good. The lower portion shows much less pitting, likely having been shielded by the sabot, and the six raised ribs are distinct and very good. Twenty-pound Parrotts were used by both sides at Gettysburg, Taft’s 5th NY Battery and Graham’s Rockbridge Artillery being two examples of batteries armed with them. It is pretty clear the shell was displayed resting on its nose since the inscription is painted upside down. It would be great not only in a Gettysburg or artillery display, but also a GAR collection. Needless to say, the shell is empty and completely inert.    [sr] [ph:L]
