Here is a Gettysburg excavated Civil War Federal 3” field artillery projectile often referred to as a Parrott Type III shell excavated from an unknown location area on the Gettysburg battlefield area. Once part of the collection from the Gettysburg G.A.R Post # 9, the cylindrical shaped projectile measures almost 8½” high and has a base diameter of 2.95” and weighs eleven pounds. Constructed of cast iron, the shell is in very good, solid condition and exhibits a smooth, dark brown surface. The shell has lost the zinc percussion fuse plug from its nose, but the threaded open cavity in the nose is in excellent condition. Shell has also lost a 2½” section of its brass ring lead sabot. Uncleaned, this pattern Parrott shell was designed to be fired from the Federal 3” wrought iron 10-Pounder Parrott Rifle (ordnance rifle). Reasonably priced, this Gettysburg battlefield-related, US 3” Parrott projectile would make a wonderful addition to any Civil War field artillery display.  [ra] [ph:L]
