Wood cut from the battlefield furnished material for all sorts of Gettysburg souvenirs. Canes were one of the most popular- functional, particularly for the aging veterans who visited the battlefield and for other tourists exploring the ground, combined with historical significance and some sentimentality. This is full length, decorated with three panels of wavy, pyrographic designs separated by short plain sections with dark end bands that also set off a swollen handle fashioned around a knot, and a panel just below it stamped in ink: “GETTYSBURG / JULY 1,2,3, 1863 / WOOD FROM / LITTLE ROUND TOP.” The condition is in very good condition, the ink stamping is clear. The lower half of the bottom decorated section is dark and there is a short lengthwise split running a few inches from the tip. The elongated knob handle shows mostly as a dark brown, mixed with some of the lighter brown shown by the body of the cane. [sr][ph:m]
