This is an outstanding cased image of a well-known casualty of the Battle of Gettysburg, featuring Burgwyn, Jr. in his Virginia Military Institute cadet uniform. He was just 21 years old and the youngest Colonel in the Confederate Army when he led the charge of the 800+ man strong 26th North Carolina Infantry into battle on July 1, 1863. Shot through both lungs, he died on the battlefield in the woods just east of Willoughby Run. His remains were later exhumed and re-interred in Raleigh, NC.

An article which appeared in the publication Military Images in the Summer 2019 issue comprehensively tells the story of the brief life and gallant death of Henry King Burgwyn, Jr., and features a full color representation of this image. Click on this link to the article entitled, “Cadet to Boy Colonel – The life and service of North Carolina’s Henry King Burgwyn, Jr.”.

A binder of research material, including a laminated color copy of the above mentioned article, accompanies the image. [ld] [ph:L]
