Featured on this card is a rare, turn of the century view of the famous sharpshooter position at Devil’s Den, which was immortalized by the early photograph of a dead Confederate soldier in that spot.
Shown in this photo are the remnants of the stone barrier, new growth trees and vegetation, and a man wearing braced trousers and a hat looking upon the position. The card is in good condition with minor edge wear. A gray background is accented by black printed text on the sides of the photos which read “Underwood and Underwood Publishers. New York, London, Toronto-Canada, Ottawa-Kansas.”; “Works and Studios – Washington, D.C. Arlington, N.J. Littleton, N.H. Sun Sculpture Trade Mark”; and a description reading “Confederate Sharp-shooters position above Devil’s Den – E. to fiercely contested Little Round Top. Gettysburg. Copyright 1903 by Underwood and Underwood.” The reverse is blank. Overall measurements are 7” x 3.5”.
A gem among stereoview cards of Gettysburg and surely a wonderful addition to any collection. [cm][ph:L]
