This dug Confederate 3.67” spherical shot was recovered long ago on private property near the area just below Devil’s Den - in the vicinity of the “Triangular Field”. Its condition is typical of dug relics with expected rust and pitting throughout.
The only battery in the southern sector of the field known to have brought a 6lb gun was the Confederate Latham’s Battery, also known as the “The Branch Artillery”. It was positioned opposite the Devil’s Den area along Warfield Ridge in support of General Hood’s portion of the July 2nd assault on the Union left. The 6lb “bronze gun” of Latham’s Battery fired on Devil’s Den and points surrounding until it was disabled and replaced with a captured 10lb Parrott Gun that evening. Only July 3rd, the battery fired on Farnsworth’s Charge and Union artillery positions close to Cemetery Ridge and Little Round Top.
This is a rare opportunity to collect a piece of the July 2nd fighting at Gettysburg that can only be positively identified to Latham’s Battery. [cm][PH:L]
