This is a scarce copy of the official order for the composition and order of march for the procession of veterans for the dedication of the NY State monument at Gettysburg on July 2, 1893. This was the main event of New York Day at Gettysburg in 1893, which actually stretched over the three days of the thirtieth anniversary of the battle, during which New York commemorated the service of its soldiers with the dedication of a state monument and the dedication or, in most cases, rededication of other New York monuments on the field as well. The state funded travel expenses for veterans of the battle to get there and for the compilation of a list of eligible veterans, which became combined with the idea of New York “Medals of Honor” for veterans of the battle at the instigation of Daniel Sickles, and is the origin of the New York Gettysburg medals sought after by collectors since they were specifically awarded to men who had fought in the battle.

This measures 8” by 19” and is in very good condition, with just minor edge losses, folds and a tear at top that partially affects the “K” in New York, but has not taken any paper with it. It would display very nicely with a New York Gettysburg medal or the effects of a NY veteran who attended the ceremonies, though it is also a reminder of the strength of Gettysburg in the country’s memory and popular culture as well.  [sr][ph:L]
