Nestled between the most important hills of the US line is Stevens’ Knoll – known before the battle as McKnight’s Hill. Featured in this photo is the famed position of the 5th Maine Battery, commanded by Captain Greenlief Stevens, the equestrian monument of General Slocum, and the monument of the 33rd Massachusetts Infantry. Slocum Avenue is plainly visible, winding its way down the slope toward the camera. No photographer is credited. Slocum Avenue was completed in 1896, which dates this image to sometime during or after that year.
The image is in excellent condition. There is a spot of image loss under the section that is framed but it does not extend onto the actual photo. It is loose in a gray sleeve mounting frame (the photo slides in through a slot in the back) that is in a likewise excellent condition. The reverse is blank and free or surface dirt, staining, and damage. The photo itself measures 4” x 5” while the mounting card/sleeve measures 5.4” x 6.6”.
A nice, antique photo of one of Gettysburg’s important military positions. [cm][ph:L]
