W. J. Mozart was a prominent early photographer of the Gettysburg area and battlefield in the years and decades after the battle. His images were praised for their clarity, lighting, and artistic portrayal of the battlefield landscape – making them perfect candidates for photogravure, or photoengraving. Photoengraving is a process that uses photographic techniques to create images on a surface, typically metal, by selectively removing or altering material through a process of etching. It involves coating the surface with a light-sensitive material, exposing it to an image (usually on film), and then developing the image to create a pattern that can be etched away or altered.

This piece was part of the monthly artistic portfolio printed by Ernest Edwards’ New York Photo-Gravure Company, a self-described Picture Periodical without Letter Press. In its first year, the publication grew from less than fifty subscribers to a monthly edition of four thousand. Responding to interest in a “higher grade of pictures” with emphasis on quality rather than quantity, the magazine transformed itself from its original concept of a “Photographic Record of Events” to an “Artistic Periodical.” By the fifth issue in January 1889, the shift was taking place; the lesser quality photomechanical method of photolithography was abandoned, and reproductions were by photogravure and “photogelatin” (collotype) only. Each issue typically featured a portfolio of eight high-quality, large photogravures and collotypes of artwork and artistic photography of leading artists and photographers of the day.

The print is in good condition with only a few surface imperfections of the border areas and is tucked inside a custom white mat.  The photo is printed at the center of a single piece of heavy paper with sharp edges and corners.  A light water stain is noted in the left corner but is fully obscured by the mat.  Two pairs of pin-sized holes are present at the top edge – a relic of the original magazine/portfolio binding. The photo area is raised from the printing process and the reverse is blank. There are light markings on the reverse within the photo printing area from counter pressing or previous mounting. The print measures 13.8” x 10.6” and the mat is cut for an 11” x 14” frame.

A neat, early print with multiple layers of history.  It would display beautifully. [cm][ph:L]
