This large, printed photo was copied from an original and features veterans in full Grand Army of the Republic regalia posing with tree branch canes at the famous Devil’s Den. All but one sport GAR medals or encampment ribbons, while two wear GAR hat/cap insignia. Their matching clothing is characteristic of GAR uniforms of the 1880’s through the 1890’s. Each man poses with a cane made from the cut branches of local Gettysburg trees, likely to become souvenirs of their return visit.
The image is mounted to a large card which shows moderate wear. Several sections of the edges are missing, torn, or damaged as shown – most prominently at the low corners and edge, and the left and right edges (though there is wear and damage at the top edges and corners). There is some layer separation of the board along the bottom and left edges with some chipping of the outer photo layer in areas of damage. The reverse shows foxing and staining appropriate for the age of the piece, with a single notation in red pencil reading “144/17/June(mostly illegible). The remnant of a small piece of transparent tape is noted at the edge of a section of damage at left. Overall measurements are 14” x 17”.
A neat image that would still display well with proper matting and framing. [cm][ph:L]
