This lot includes a photograph of survivors of the 6th U.S. Cavalry, a reunion ribbon, and a commemorative token featuring Medal of Honor recipient George Platt.
The photo is 6.25” x 4.75” pasted to a 9” x 7” gray mount. It features a hand full of survivors with some family members posed in front of the Musselman house in Fairfield Station. A banner seen in the photo reads, “HEADQUARTERS OF T6TH U.S. CAVALRY”. The Musselman house still stands.
The yellow ribbon remains bright and in excellent condition. Printing on the ribbon was done in silver. There is a stamped metal hanger with spring pin on back on top of the ribbon and silver bullion fringe sewn to the bottom.
A recent commemorative token is included that commemorates George Platt, one of two Medal of Honor recipients from the fighting that occurred at Fairfield on July 3rd.
The Battle of Fairfield was a cavalry engagement during the Gettysburg Campaign. It was fought July 3, 1863, near Fairfield, Pennsylvania, concurrently with the Battle of Gettysburg, although it was not a formal part of that battle. While a minor fight by the small number of troops deployed, strategically, the Confederate victory secured the important Hagerstown Road, which the Army of Northern Virginia would use to return to Maryland and then on to safety in Virginia. Federal losses were 6 killed, 28 wounded, and 208 unaccounted for—primarily prisoners. The losses for the Confederates were 8 killed, 21 wounded, and 5 missing.
