This is an excavated Civil War iron picket pin.  A southern, hand-forged copy of the Federal regulation piece of cavalry equipment. Used to stake-down a horse temporarily while on picket or grazing.

Measures approximately 11.75” long overall.  Here, the iron “figure 8” loop that swivels around the top is made of iron wire twisted three times. The “head” at the top is somewhat flattened from being hammered into the ground. The lower portion of the pin shows heavy hammering.

Iron was well treated and coated, and is in very good condition and stable. Recovered from unknown location at Gettysburg. Originally sold by the Horse Soldier; so long ago we no longer have the records (early inventory number of only 4 digits).

A “dug” Confederate and Gettysburg picket pin in great shape.   [jet][ph:L]
