This nicely turned wood gavel uses a bullet-struck piece of wood with the base of the bullet visible on one side. On the other is a faint ink stamp reading, “GETTYSBURG / JULY 1.2.3. 1863” on the upper half and “WOOD FROM” on the lower half, with the specific battlefield location not legible, though Culps Hill, Reynolds Woods and the Round Tops provided a large proportion of the wood for such souvenirs. For similar examples see “Gettysburg Battlefield Souvenirs & Relics,” especially page 288, which shows a pretty much identical example made by wood-turner John Good, who ran the “Gettysburg Novelty Works” here in town and produced a host of cups, urns, gavels, miniature battlefield monuments and other items. This one is in exceptionally nice condition. [sr][ph:m]
