This ball is from a round of canister fired from a 12-pound field piece and was found in the area of Rock Creek on the edge of Culp’s Hill here at Gettysburg. This shows as brown in color with a crusty surface, but remains untouched and preserves the original find location noted in slightly yellowing white paint: “ROCK CREEK / CULP’S / HILL.” This area was the scene of heavy fighting on the afternoon of July 2 and early July 3 as Confederates tried to pry loose the right flank of the Union line. As we remark elsewhere in connection with canister shot, they are a pretty clear indication the fighting was getting close and desperate, as was certainly the case amid the trees, rocks, and boulders of Culp’s Hill.
