The Rosensteel family needs no introduction to students of the battle and the history of the battlefield. This ball is from a 12-pound round of canister, was found in the north Trostle house woods, and was in the collection of Iva Rosensteel Rider (1887-1964,) sister of George Rosensteel, who expanded the initial family collections and played a critical role in the establishment of the national museum and visitor’s center, etc. This remained in the Rider family with the rest of her relics until we purchased the collection in 2016. It shows natural rust and corrosion, but remains untouched and preserves the original find location noted in white paint: “N. / TROSTLE / HOUSE / WOODS.” This area was the scene of heavy fighting on July 2 as Longstreet tried to roll up the left of the Union line and as we often remark canister shot is a sure sign of heavy fighting, employed by artillery crews as enemy infantry closed the distance.
