This 6 x 3 ¾” paper fragment is handwritten in ink, and is dated “Qr Mr Dept. C.S. Army / June 29th 1863”. Overall in good condition; all writing is legible. Fold lines; old tape repairs on reverse at center horizontal fold.

The text of the document reads as follows:

“I have this day, taken for the use of the C.S. Army one Four Horse Wagon & 4 setts harness worth One Hundred and twenty five Dollars for property of John Hade of Franklin County, Pa.                                                                                                                J.A. Karnes for / Major J.G. Paxton Qr Mr / Jenkins Cavalry Brigade”

The farmer in question, John B. Hade (1834-1903) resided in Quincy Township, Franklin County, some 18 miles west of Gettysburg. In 1868 Hades filed a Civil War Border Claim to try to recoup his losses under PA House Bill 750 which authorized payment of damages sustained by citizens during the war.  It appears he was awarded a sum of $837.00.  Hade signed up for the draft but it does not appear that he served in the Union Army at any time. Hade died at the age of 69 and is buried in Hades Church Cemetery in Shady Grove, Franklin County, PA.

The document was written by Private James Allen Karnes, age 22; born in 1838, he enlisted on 5/5/62 at Mercer County, WV and was mustered into Co. H, 8th Virginia Cavalry. He took his Oath of Allegiance on 6/22/65 in Charleston, WV.  He died on 12/28/1915, and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Princeton, Mercer County, West Virginia.

Maj. James Gardner Paxton (1821-1870) was quartermaster of Brigadier General Albert G. Jenkin’s cavalry brigade. He briefly attended the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, matriculating with the Class of 1843, but he was recorded as having attended the 1839-1840 session at Washington College (now Washington & Lee), and was awarded a baccalaureate in 1841. He then attended Harvard College’s Law School, graduating in 1843 with a Bachelor of Laws degree. Paxton and one of his sons died in a Chesapeake & Ohio railroad accident in 1870.  We have downloaded a 145 page file of Paxton’s military records from fold3.com on Paxton, click on the link to view.  [sr][ph:L]
