Iron non-regulation bit used by Northern and Southern cavalry of the Civil War period. Side “cheek” pieces are approximately 6.5” long. These have two loops (at top and bottom) for tack. Constructed of only three pieces of iron: two check pieces and a mouth piece. No other cross bars or rings. Lower rings remain while one of the top rings is broken off. Light surface rust overall consistent with an early battlefield pick-up.

From Lee’s Headquarters Museum collection in Gettysburg and originally listed in Horse Soldier catalog #28 (1999) as item R6451.   [jet][ph:L]
