A very good condition, cloth bound copy of a 27-page book covering the dedication of the Skelly Post G.A.R. monument, including the dedicatory address of local newspaper editor and U.S. Congressman  Edward McPherson and a list of Adams County soldiers who died in the war. The dedication took place in February 1892. The book bears an 1893 printing date- though these dates are often advanced a year. The book is in very condition with just some minor stains to the cover.

The immense drama, importance and losses of the battle often overshadow the personal sacrifice of many families in the county. The post was named after Johnston Hastings (Jack) Skelly, who served in the 87th Pennsylvania and died of wounds received at Second Winchester in June 1863- essentially, the opening battle of the Gettysburg Campaign. The post was organized in 1867 as Post #9 and purchased the old Methodist Church building in 1880 to use as its meeting place. The members began moving toward the erection of a suitable monument nearby in 1885. Both still stand. The building itself was acquired by the Historic Preservation Society of Gettysburg-Adams County in 1988, underwent a careful restoration, and is open for special events.  [sr][ph:L]
