Written by Elise Scharf Fox (1937 -2005), edited with additions to the text by Harry Stokes. First Edition, published 1988 by Downtown, Inc. Softcover, 160 pages.  Heavily illustrated with black & white photos.  Excellent, near new condition.

Elise researched and wrote the book, "Hotel Gettysburg, A Landmark In Our Nation's History", the history of Hotel Gettysburg, which was operated by her grandfather and father. The proceeds of the sale of the book benefited Downtown Gettysburg, Inc. [Main Street Gettysburg].  Elise was a life member of the Adams County Historical Society and the Gettysburg Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of the Gettysburg Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Adams County Republican Women's Council, Historic Gettysburg-Adams County and the Gettysburg Presbyterian Church.

The Gettysburg Hotel was present for those momentous days and their aftermath, but at that time had a different name. It was originally built in 1797 as a tavern and inn known as Scott’s Tavern. In 1809 the building was acquired by the former York County sheriff, William McClellan, who changed the name to The Little Indian Queen. In 1846 the tavern changed names once again to the McClellan House after the two brothers who next owned it. This was the name under which it operated in 1863 at the time of General Robert E. Lee’s fateful incursion into Union territory. In the 1890s a new owner gave the hotel a complete renovation and renamed the property the Gettysburg Hotel. As the 20th century began, the hotel had its own fine dining restaurant, electric lighting, steam heating, and hot and cold baths. Initially, these were all amenities nearly unheard of in other hotels in Pennsylvania or much of the rest of the country. This established a reputation for the Gettysburg Hotel of being a luxurious destination, drawing a host of celebrities and dignitaries to the property over the course of many decades. Most notably was President Dwight D. Eisenhower who used the hotel as a temporary White House while he recovered at his nearby farmhouse from a heart attack in 1955. President Eisenhower and his wife Mamie loved the hotel so much that they were the hotel’s last guests when the owner closed the Gettysburg Hotel in 1964. The abandoned old building suffered a fire in 1983, but was rebuilt as the Gettysburg Hotel in 1991, better than ever. Owned now by Gettysburg College, which initiated a very thorough restoration in cooperation with the Historic Architectural Review Board before it reopened the hotel. The Gettysburg Hotel, Est. 1797 has been a member of the Historic Hotels of America since 2003.   [ld][ph:L]
