Offered here is a well-worn 8.5” x 4” x 2.25” brick from the McClellan House on Baltimore Street in Gettysburg. This house was between the lines during the battle and where Mary Virginia “Jennie” Wade was struck by a stray bullet and killed while baking bread for nearby Union soldiers. The brick is generally soft with dusty surface. A typed label is attached stating history and that it was gifted to Mr. Coco in 1976 by the owner.
The McClellan House in Gettysburg is better known as the Jennie Wade House, a historical site at 548 Baltimore Street where the only civilian casualty, Jennie Wade, was killed during the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. The house, which belonged to her sister, Georgia Wade McClellan, was hit by over 150 bullets and one artillery shell during the fighting.
This comes from the Gregory A. Coco collection. Greg was born in Marksville, Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana in 1946. He served in Vietnam and was a Park Ranger at Gettysburg NMP for many years. Greg enjoyed historical research and authored many books relating to the Battle of Gettysburg, most notably “A Vast Sea of Misery” and “A Strange and Blighted Land”. [jet] [ph:L]
