J. Howard Wert is a veritable legend among Gettysburg enthusiasts. His work, A Complete Hand-Book of the Monuments and Indications and Guide to the Positions on the Gettysburg Battlefield is a significant guide to the Gettysburg battlefield first published in 1886, which aimed to identify the positions of monuments erected to commemorate the battle. This work, published by B.M. Sturgeon & Co., details the early memorialization efforts on the battlefield, including both Union and Confederate efforts to mark positions.
The front cover is separated but complete, with some light wear to the edges. Minor loss of spine cover is noted. The top of the front cover is signed “Wm Arch, Mcleans” in lightly oxidized ink. Also included is a clipped J. Howard Wert signature, measuring 1” x 4”.
A neat grouping of early Gettysburg interpretation, preservation, and memorialization. [cm][ph:L]
