"Joel Albertus Danner (son of Joel B. Danner) was just 16 when he witnessed the battle that came to his hometown. He picked up relics from the field and crafted some of them into useful objects such as small gas lamps made from hollowed cannon balls. In 1865, he opened one of the first museums in Gettysburg to display his relic collection. His museum was unique in that visitors could actually purchase the displayed objects as souvenirs."
Here for sale is one of his early collected rarities a Civil War Model 1858 corrugated-pattern tin canteen, often called the “Bullseye” pattern. The 8-inch diameter body consists of two circular sections of pressed tin soldered together at the rim. The bullseye or corrugated pattern of concentric rings began in 1861 as an effort to increase the durability of the item. The canteen no longer has its wool cover, nor a sling. The pewter spout and strap brackets are intact. The well used spout has the Philadelphia maker’s stamp Hadden, Porter & Booth. The condition is excellent considering it may have laid on the ground for weeks after the battle. And the metal surface although not bright as when new. is not rusted overall but shows gray patinated metal over 80% of the surface.
There are 2 distinct impact holes in this canteen. Both possibly caused by a single projectile based on the trajectory. Both holes show what seems to be projectile entry evidence with the disturbed metal forced inward. However, be aware that over 150 years as a curiosity this was picked up constantly and this handling by perhaps hundreds over the years has certainly changed the details/contours on the impacted areas. Painted across the top front obverse are the distinctive white letters always used by Danner "Culp's Hill". A printed and glued red inventory tag has "7" on it. An early Danner collected canteen that was struck at Gettysburg on Culp's Hill. [pe] [ph:L]
