This title claims a spot firmly among the most-read firsthand accounts of the Battle of Gettysburg. Tillie Pierce’s recollections of the battle from the point of view of a young girl made her something of a celebrity upon their publishing in 1889, and provided unique insight into the horrors and adventures associated with the fighting and its aftermath.

Though the condition of this example is characterized as fair, it does little to detract from its rarity.  The cover is cloth with deeply embossed title text and decorative horizontal patterning. The spine and rear cover are blank.  Wear is noted across the cover, with most of it concentrated along the spine and at the corners. The binding is broken with separation from the cover but the book is complete.  Very light surface dirt/dust and scattered page edge wear are present, a function of the slightly acidic paper.  A penciled name on the front flyleaf appears to read “Ruth Mrisant Pleasant” with random penciled markings between. Dimensions are 5.1” x 7.5”.

Overall, a scarce and accessible piece of early post-battle Gettysburg history.   [cm][ph:L]
