This is an excavated 3” Schenkl case shot (filled with lead shrapnel balls) artillery shell in excellent “dug” condition. Iron surface remains good with moderate surface pitting. Masking tape around shell with black marker. This is from a listing in an old Horse Soldier print catalogue, where it was item number G158. We have not had the opportunity to search through all the old issues to note the year we first sold it. Fine silver lettering on the nose of the shell reads, GETTYSBURG / “OAK RIDGE” / BEHIND / PEACE [LI]GHT”.
Retains top portion of zinc combination fuse; the top “knob” portion is gone. Clear coated with no active rusting. Deactivated (drilled through side) and safe.
Likely fired from 13th New York Light Artillery, “Wheelers Battery” under command of Lieutenant William Wheeler. The battery was equipped with four 3″ Ordnance Rifles and fired upon Oak Hill toward where the Peace Light Memorial now stands.
Recovered long ago by a long-time local relic hunter. [jet][ph:L]
