Wood cut from the battlefield furnished material for all sorts of Gettysburg souvenirs. Canes were one of the most popular- functional, particularly for the aging veterans who visited the battlefield and for other tourists exploring the ground, combined with historical significance and some sentimentality.
This is full length, decorated with three panels of wavy, pyrographic designs separated by short plain sections with dark end bands. A panel just reads “L ROUND TOP” with corps badges on the opposite side, representing the Union corps present at Gettysburg: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 11th and 12th. The cane is in very good condition, the ink stamping is clear. The handle shows some wear as does the brass tip at the bottom.
Included above is a scan of a photo of several young local Gettysburg boys who had a thriving business which involved gathering wood from various spots on the battlefield and burning the names of the locations onto them and selling them as canes to returning veterans. This photo is dated 1900 and was included in the book Adams County Area Pictorial History published in 1996 by the Gettysburg Times. [ld][ph:L]
