This Civil War P.J. Malherbe & Company “Saxon” Percussion Rifle was once part of George Rosensteel’s Civil War National Museum located in Gettysburg, PA on the Taneytown Road. Later the museum incorporated the famous “Electric Map” invented by his son Joe Rosensteel. George over the next several decades added many artifacts found locally to the museum collection. In 1971 George’s family sold the museum building to the Federal Government. The National Park Service Cyclorama Building and the Rosensteel Building would be incorporated as the National Park Service Visitor Centers until 2013 when both buildings were demolished. The collection was donated by the Rosensteel family to the National Park Service.

Prior to this time, material was removed from the museum and added to the private collection of George and Emily Rosensteel, including this musket and several firearms, edged weapons and relics. Over the years, George and Emily gave various relics to family members including grandchildren. This firearm was given to Dan Rosensteel, son of Joe Rosensteel and grandson of George and Emily Rosensteel.

Letters “AHC” are carved into the cheek plate side forward of the hammer.

Accompanied by old museum tag which reads, “#179 / P. Malherbe @CH   A Liege”.

This P.J. Malherbe & Company “Saxon” Percussion Rifle was part of Dan’s collection until purchased by Wes Small, partner in the Horse Soldier LLC, on January 14, 2019.  [ws][ph:L]
