This badge was awarded to veterans from New York who attended the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg reunion in 1913.
The hanger on this badge shows two veterans shaking hands with a flag in the background. Written on the hanger is "1863 - 1913 / New York - Gettysburg". On the back of the hanger is a spring pin and the engraving, “Albert S. Bostwick / Rochester, N.Y.” The drop has General Meade and General Lee's likeness in the center with guns, cannons, swords, and Union shields surrounding the general’s likeness. The badge was made by the Whitehead & Hoag Company, Newark, New Jersey as noted on the back of the drop.
Albert S. Bostwick was born on July 26, 1842, in Livonia, New York. He was a 20-year-old printer when he enlisted on 8/22/1862 at Rochester, NY as a Private in Company “D” of the 140th New York Infantry. Albert was wounded on July 2 at Gettysburg where the regiment was hotly engaged on Little Round Top! He recovered and was promoted to Corporal on 3/6/1865, and Sergeant on 5/1/1865. Mustered Out on 6/3/1865 at Alexandria, VA. Albert Bostwick died on April 25, 1924 (aged 81) in Rochester, New York, and is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery. [jet][ph:L]
