This stereo view photograph features the famous “Gettysburg Gun” of the 1st RI, Battery B, which was hit by incoming fire during the Confederate bombardment preceding “Pickett’s Charge”.  When a Confederate round struck the muzzle of the gun, two men were killed and two others rushed to finish loading the gun.  Despite the dent in the tube, a desperate effort was made to forcefully load the gun, which by then had cooled and trapped the projectile for the remainder of history.  The “Gettysburg Gun” became something of a celebrity artifact, and remains on display in Rhode Island as of this writing.

Dual image is mounted to a yellow card, labeled “Sights and Scenes From The Battlefield of Gettysburg.” at either side, and “No. 494-Rebel Shot lodged in Union Gun at Battle of Gettysburg.” (note that it is not a Rebel shot lodged in the piece, rather a Rebel shot caused the condition). Some light corner wear is noted, along with very light surface dirt.  Reverse is blank with mild, scattered staining.

A very neat photograph of a true icon of the Battle of Gettysburg.   [cm] [ph:L]
