The 1864 Report of the Select Committee Relative to the Soldiers' National Cemetery is a 111-page Pennsylvania House of Representatives document detailing the creation of the Gettysburg cemetery. It includes early printings of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, Edward Everett’s oration, a map, and lists of over 3,500 Union dead.

The report was made on January 7, 1864, by a special committee to the Pennsylvania Legislature regarding the purchase of land and re-interment of Union soldiers.  The volume contains official reports on the dedication ceremonies (November 19, 1863), including speeches by President Abraham Lincoln and Hon. Edward Everett.  Also included are detailed records of fallen soldiers – encompassing names, states, and items recovered from their bodies.

The book is cloth-covered with embossed gilt text.  A very slight tear is noted at front near the lower spine, with some wear at both edges of the spine.  Very light spot fading is scattered across the cover – primarily the front – but does little to detract from the presentation of the book. Cover edges some shelf wear, with a slight dent at the rear upper edge. Pages are crisp with no foxing or overt damage.  All plates and illustrations are in good condition.  An inscription on the front inside cover reads “J. B. Stark / Harrisburg / 17th Aug 1864” and a modern tag on the opposite flyleaf denotes the one-time owner and status as inventory of a private museum (The Old Stone House Museum).  Dimensions are 6.25” x 9.75”.

A rare and very important piece for the Gettysburg or Civil War collector.  [cm][ph:L]
