An exceptionally significant original albumen print from Alexander Gardner's landmark Photographic Sketch Book of the War. The image documents the Leister House — the modest farmhouse on the Taneytown Road that served as General Meade's headquarters during the three days of fighting at Gettysburg, July 1–3, 1863, the pivotal battle of the Civil War.

This is one of the most historically resonant images in the entire Gardner series. It was from this humble structure that Meade directed the Army of the Potomac through the crisis of Pickett's Charge on July 3rd, and where the famous council of war was held the night of July 2nd. The Leister House still stands today on the Gettysburg battlefield as a National Historic Landmark.

The negative was made by Timothy H. O'Sullivan, with the positive printed by Alexander Gardner, Washington. Plate number, photographer credits, full title, and July 1863 date all fully legible.

Presented in a mahogany-finish wood frame with double mat and UV-protective plexiglass — museum-quality preservation for one of the most important addresses in American military history.

Plate: No. 48, July 1863

Frame Dimensions: 18" x 16.5"

Condition: Good. Toning and foxing to mount consistent with age; image well-defined.    [ss] [ph:L]
