Interesting souvenir badge made for sale at the 50th Anniversary commemoration ceremonies at Gettysburg in 1913. Gilt brass pinback top bar reading “SOUVENIR” in raised letters. The badge suspended by two links, and showing an interesting mix of iconography plainly in the spirit of sectional reconciliation, though it was not as easy to implement as to aspire to. Not only is there a US flag at upper left and a Confederate battleflag at upper right, partially hidden by the central round medallion with wreath edge, but the rather fierce US eagle with wide-spread wings, crouching between the spearpoint staffs of the flags, is in counterpoint to the flying dove at center with the olive branch of peace in its beak. “50th ANNIVERSARY OF BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG / JULY 1-5, 1913” in raised letters in a band between the dove and the wreath. Very good blue enamel in the CS cross and US canton with white showing in two stripes of the US flag and the dove, and light green in the leaves it carries. Some faint hints of red in the band around the dove, but unclear if there was red enameling. Very nice condition overall. Pin in place on top bar. “Chas. M. Robbins” raised maker’s mark on bottom reverse of planchet. Please see our photos.     [sr][ph:m/L]
