This small red silk ribbon is free from frills but nonetheless exhibits important details, namely “4th / New York / Ind. Battery / 2nd Div. / 3rd CORPS / Army of Potomac / Gettysburg / 1863 1888.” Many regiments dedicated their battlefield monuments in 1888, and as indicated, the 4th New York Independent Battery was one of those units. Their monument features a standing artilleryman holding a sponge; it is placed just above Devil’s Den, looking at the face of Little Round Top. Smith’s Battery was outfitted with 10-Pounder Parrott guns.
The ribbon itself is in good condition. There is fraying of the top and bottom edges, but these are stable. Adhesive remnants at the bottom edge are present.
This is a great little piece from a monument dedication in one of the most popular Gettysburg battlefield locations! [sr][ph:m]
