Offered is a rustic souvenir walking cane fashioned from a gnarled root or twisted branch section, finished with a rich dark brown stain and varnish typical of Gettysburg battlefield souvenir canes produced for veterans and tourists from the late 19th into the early 20th century. The shaft displays natural knots, burls, and irregular grain, with the shaft pyrography-decorated (wood-burned) reading "GETTYSBURG BATTLEFIELD, Little Roundtop." The handle terminates in a naturally curved root knob, retaining bark texture and knurl consistent with hand-selected, unturned root stock. Measures 35 1/2" in length.

Canes of this type were a well-known cottage industry around Gettysburg, sold to veterans returning for reunions and to tourists visiting the battlefield, often marketed explicitly as having been cut from wood growing on or near the field itself. There is a well-known photo of young local Gettysburg boys at Devil's Den in 1900 displaying canes of this type to sell as souvenirs -- Emory Daugherty, Arthur Shields, William Shields, Clarence Shields, and Thomas Rosensteel -- with the pyrography burner used to decorate the canes visible in the image. That photo is included in the book "Adams County Area Pictorial History." Given the twisted grain, dark stain, knob handle, and burned battlefield inscription, this example is entirely consistent with that same local cane-making tradition (no claim is made that this specific example appears in the photo).

CONDITION: Sound and displaying an attractive natural patina from age and handling. Retains original dark finish with typical wear to high points. No repairs noted.  [ss][ph:L]
