The Gettysburg desk set or relic display follows the Victorian ideal of combining the artistic, the historic and the useful by artistically arranging relics from the Gettysburg battlefield on a wood base that incorporates an inkwell. The relics consist of three Minie balls, two of which show signs of having been fired, a roundball from one of the smoothbore muskets that were still carried by some of the troops in the battle, a larger iron canister shot from one of the close-range anti-personnel rounds employed by artillery crew, a section of the triangular blade from a socket bayonet, still showing a US marking and arsenal forger’s initials indicating it is an 1816 pattern, or one of the subsequent close variations, and, most interesting of all- two buttons- a general service eagle button symbolizing the Union and a South Carolina button standing in for the Confederacy. The buttons show some slight pushes, but the condition of the relics overall is good, and quite secondary to the purpose of the whole.  The base measures 6” X 3-1/2” X 1.”

This set is characteristic of John Good who produced these here in Gettysburg about 1895-1915. They were very popular among visiting tourists and veterans, the latter probably finding them much more meaningful as reminders of their youth and likely the most significant experience of their lives.   [sr][ph:L]
