The brass tip from the scabbard of a Model 1855 bayonet as used with 1855, 1861 and 1863 rifle muskets. This is in very good condition, showing brown in color with a couple of shallow dings, but no cracks or breaks. It carries an old collector’s inventory number and find location in small white letters indicating it was recovered on the Rose Farm here at Gettysburg.

This was the site of heavy back and forth fighting on the Union left on July 2 as Longstreet’s attack, delivered en-echelon from south to north, battered and then pushed back Union lines that Sickles had rashly advanced. Union forces were heavily engaged around Devils Den, the slopes of Little Round Top, the Wheatfield, the Rose Woods and the Peach Orchard before finally being hammered into a position from which Confederate attacks could not budge them. Some of the most telling photographs Gettysburg battlefield dead were taken on the Rose Farm.
