This large fragment consists of approximately half of a 3” Read artillery shell. This is the top, or nose portion, of the shell. Note the taped (and unthreaded) fuse hole made to accept a wood time fuse adapter, the lathe lug located just below the fuse hole, and the top bourrelet running around the body of the shell.

Of special interest is the paper label attached to the body with “Gettysburg, PA” written in old ink. This piece is from the collection that was housed at the York Springs GAR Post 551.  Many of the items were collected and curated by David Starry, a Civil War veteran who served in an emergency regiment detailed to the Military District of Gettysburg after the battle for administrative, medical, and cleanup duties, before being mustered out in town.  [ph:L]
