This photograph, likely taken by William Tipton, features men and women in 1890’s attire posing and milling about in the iconic Devil’s Den on the Gettysburg Battlefield.

The image is mounted to a large card with a dark gray front, measuring 10” x 12”.  Aside from very mild corner wear to the card, the piece is in good condition and the image itself is in near fine condition.  The reverse is clean with a penciled “A” and stamped “HARRY L. CARSON / 601 MAIN ST. / WATSONTOWN, PA 17777”.  According to records, Harry was born in 1917 and passed away in Watsontown in 2009.

Local photographer William Tipton established Tipton Park, a 13-acre commercial development right at Devil's Den. It featured a restaurant, a covered dance pavilion, a refreshment saloon, and a dedicated photographic gallery. Tipton set up heavy, large-format cameras on tripods permanently around the rocks. His darkroom wagon was parked nearby in the Plum Run Valley to process images on-site.

A neat link to the earlier days of Gettysburg tourism from one of the more notable photographers and proponents of the Gettysburg Battlefield.  Housed in a modern frame for ease of display.  [cm] [ph:L]
