Mumper & Co. was a prominent 19th-century photography in Gettysburg, operated by Civil War veteran Levi Mumper and his son, Jacob Ira Mumper. Based out of a studio at 25 Baltimore St., they were famous for capturing battlefield landmarks and tourist souvenirs.

This stereo view image of the monument to the 2nd Company of Massachusetts Sharpshooters was likely captured in 1885, when the monument was placed.  Big Round Top is visible over the period-thinned Rose Woods and the western edge of the Wheatfield.  The mounting card is a pale yellow and in very good condition. The dual image is flanked on either side by Mumper commercial markings and the reverse is blank and clean, save for a period inked “#268”, a small and subtle section of removed tape, and an old, lightly-penciled price.

The monument to the 2nd Company of Massachusetts Sharp Shooters (also known as the Andrew Sharpshooters) is located south of Gettysburg on the south side of the Loop of Sickles Avenue within the Gettysburg National Military Park. It stands on Stony Hill overlooking the Wheatfield and Rose Woods, marking a position where the unit held a critical skirmish line on July 2, 1863.

Originally formed for Colonel Hiram Berdan’s sharpshooter regiments, the two companies of Massachusetts sharpshooters decided to remain as state troops when told that they would lose the state enlistment bounty by joining Berdan’s Federal regiments. The two companies of Sharp Shooters were nominally independent, although each operated with a Massachusetts regiment. The 2nd Company operated with the 22nd Massachusetts Regiment.

Original Mumper photographs are highly sought-after by collectors. This rarely-seen view of the southern portion of the battlefield is quite special among early Gettysburg images.   [cm][ph:L]
