Mumper & Co. was a prominent 19th-century photography studio in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, famous for its extensive documentation of the Gettysburg battlefield. Founded by Civil War veteran Levi Mumper, the studio operated from the late 1860s until 1909, cementing its place in early American and Gettysburg photographic history. Over decades, the business occupied spaces on West Middle Street, a temporary stint in Littlestown, and a well-known commercial gallery at 25 Baltimore Street in downtown Gettysburg.
Featured in this late 1800’s eastward view is the monument to the 2nd Company of Andrew’s Sharpshooters/22nd Massachusetts Infantry. Plainly visible behind is the shelter tent-shaped monument to the 32nd Massachusetts, dedicated in 1895. The image is mounted to a muted card with some staining that does extend to portions of the image. Mild edge wear is noted but the rarity of the photo and its presentation are unaffected. The reverse shows a larger through-stain to the right. Period ink writing reads “ 32 / 2d Co Andrew Sharp Shooters and 32d Mass on Sickles ave near wheat field / #268” and a commercial stamp lists their studio and gallery location on Baltimore Street.
An uncommon view of Stony Hill and The Loop that differs from today. A great piece for the Civil War or earlier Gettysburg image collector. [cm][ph:L]
